Embracing youthful perspectives in leadership

Reflections from the YMCA annual conference.

I had the honour of speaking at the YMCA annual conference this year.

As the chair of the YMCA, I often reflect on the importance of giving back and how we can use our unique skill sets to benefit others.

My background is a blend of commercial wisdom and behavioural insights. These give me a comprehensive understanding of how organisations should function and the significance of diverse perspectives.

The uses of youthful leadership highlighted at the conference

One issue touched upon at the conference is the age composition of boards and trustees.

Many of our current chairs and trustees are older, bringing a wealth of experience but sometimes lacking the relatability to younger generations. This disproportion can create a disconnect, particularly for the young people staying at the YMCA.

Integrating younger voices into our leadership structures is important. Bringing younger people onto boards and involving them as trustees ensures that the YMCA remains relevant and connected to the younger demographic it serves. This approach helps to fill positions. But it also fosters a deeper connection with the community.

Shadow boards as inspiration

For instance, ‘Shadow boards’ often involve younger people as members, allowing them to gain valuable experience and provide fresh perspectives. This prepares the next generation of leaders and enriches our decision-making processes with diverse viewpoints.

The inclusion of younger trustees is more than just a nod to diversity. It's a strategic move to bridge the gap between different generations.

Young trustees bring fresh energy, new ideas, and an innate ability to relate to the younger population. They challenge the status quo, driving us to evolve and adapt in ways that are essential for sustained success.

Final thoughts

My experience at the conference reaffirmed my belief in the power of different perspectives.

Embracing the skills and insights of younger people creates a more dynamic and inclusive organisation.

It's about finding that balance.

It’s about leveraging the experience of seasoned professionals while welcoming the innovative spirit of younger generations.

Giving back is not just about contributing time or resources; it's about shaping the future. Through initiatives like shadow boards and the inclusion of young trustees, we can ensure that the YMCA continues to thrive and serve its community effectively.
